Access Butler County Clerk Records

The Butler County Circuit Clerk is the court-record office for local District Court and Circuit Court proceedings. A Butler County Circuit Clerk records search may involve civil, criminal, domestic relations, child support, traffic, juvenile, warrants, or copy requests. Alabama also uses statewide online access for paid trial-court searches, so the local office and the state portal work together. The Circuit Clerk can provide records and procedural routing, but the office cannot give legal advice or decide which filing strategy a party should use.

Butler County Circuit Clerk

Butler County's primary clerk for Alabama state trial court records is Circuit Clerk Mattie Gomillion. Her official Circuit Clerk page describes the office as the official record keeper and business manager for proceedings held in District and Circuit Courts. That wording matters because probate is separate. Estate, will, guardianship, conservatorship, marriage-recording, and probate land-record questions route to the Probate Office, while District and Circuit Court case files route to the Circuit Clerk.

The Circuit Clerk keeps court records, collects and disburses court funds, prepares subpoenas, issues trial and hearing notices, collects fines and fees, interacts with the public, and manages jury functions. The office also serves as Absentee Election Manager for Butler County elections. Court records are divided by function, including civil, criminal, domestic, child support, traffic, juvenile, and warrants. That staff structure makes it useful to route a request to the right division from the start.

Butler Clerk Record Duties

District civil records, small claims records, domestic-relations files, criminal cases, traffic matters, child-support files, juvenile files, jury records, and warrant-related court papers can all touch the Circuit Clerk's system. Public access is not identical for each record. Juvenile records are confidential under Alabama law, unserved warrants are not public in Butler County, and sealed or expunged criminal records should not appear in ordinary public searches.

  • Maintain District Court and Circuit Court case records.
  • Process filings, pleadings, subpoenas, notices, and service paperwork.
  • Collect fines, costs, filing fees, and other court funds.
  • Manage jury responsibilities and courthouse jury communications.
  • Route traffic, domestic, civil, criminal, child support, juvenile, and warrant matters.

Alacourt ACCESS is the statewide paid online route for public trial-court case searches. The local Clerk's Office remains the fallback for older records, certified copies, non-digitized filings, and questions that cannot be solved through the portal.

Request Butler Certified Copies

A certified copy is a clerk-authenticated copy used when plain printouts are not enough. Divorce decrees are the clearest Butler example in the research. The domestic-relations page states that a certified copy of a divorce decree costs $5 and may be requested by mail with a money order and self-addressed stamped envelope, or in person during regular business hours with cash or money order. Money orders are payable to Butler County Circuit Court.

  1. Identify the record type: civil order, criminal order, divorce decree, traffic record, or another District or Circuit Court document.
  2. Gather the case number if known, party names, approximate filing date, and document name.
  3. Contact the correct staff division or visit the Circuit Clerk's Office at the courthouse.
  4. For a certified divorce decree by mail, send a $5 money order and a self-addressed stamped envelope.
  5. Use the Circuit Clerk for a full divorce decree; use ADPH only when a statewide divorce certificate is enough.

Note: Clerk staff can explain office procedure and fees, but the local court site says the Circuit Clerk cannot give legal advice.

No single Butler County court-record request form was located for all clerk copy requests. Butler County Clerk Fees

The Butler civil fee sheet and related local pages provide filing and service amounts. Butler Clerk Forms

Butler court pages point users to Alabama court eForms for common District and Circuit Court filings. Forms include statements of claim, hardship affidavits, default judgment papers, answers and counterclaims, subpoenas, garnishments, writs of execution, and notices of appeal. District civil appeals must be filed within 14 calendar days after judgment, while unlawful detainer appeals have a 7-day deadline.

For district civil and small claims, Butler sources stress complete defendant address or employment information because service drives the next step in the case. The district civil page also says service dates are sent by mail with a computer printout and asks parties not to call just to check the service date. Settlement notices, continuance requests, default requests, garnishments, executions, and certificates of judgment each have their own timing and form needs, so a copy or filing request should name the exact paper being sought.
